I first heard of lucid dreaming many years ago when I was listening to a radio phone in, in which a listener had rang in to recount his experience with lucid dreaming. The caller had described the process he had undergone in order to experience lucid dreams and the whole story sounded like a complete fable or that the guy had been experimenting with LSD!
However, recently the subject of lucid dreaming seems to be cropping up on a regular basis, and there are many Youtube videos which claim to lead you into the relevant state, most of them using “binaural beats” which are said to get the brain into the correct state to become susceptible to the relevant dream state. I will return to the subject of binaural beats at a later date as there is so much to be said about their possible uses and benefits, however a lot of lucid dreaming experts seem to believe that they may be a key component for the experience.
What is Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming is said to be the experience of being aware you are dreaming, therefore being able to take control of the dream. This has happened to me twice I believe. On one of the occasions, all i wanted to do was break windows for some bizarre reason but I knew i could do it as there would be no repercussions, and i enjoyed the sound! But experts in this subject will have you believe that you can “train” yourself to go in lucid dreams.
Train the Brain
Once again, this whole subject is worthy of a lot more comment and i will do this at a later date, however, for anyone wanting to attempt to experience a lucid dream, the common consensus seems to be that you first have to document your dreams as you wake up, and write down as much detail as possible from them. This apparently forces the conscious mind into taking more notice of dreams. However, the seemingly most important habit to get into is to give yourself constant reality checks during the day, asking yourself questions such as “Am i dreaming”, “Am I awake” and looking at your hands which seems to be a common theme. The thought process for this being that if you constantly get into the habit of doing these reality checks during the day, your brain will hopefully also do them while you’re asleep. So there you go, there’s your basic instructions for trying to achieve a lucid dream!

So what are the positives about lucid dreaming you may ask?! Well, people who experience them on a regular basis say they are a most wonderful experience as once you are aware you are dreaming, you can therefore take control and literally do anything you like. I can see how that would be very addictive! You could be in the Playboy Mansion within seconds, or if you are a woman, you could head straight for the set of Coronation Street! (just kidding girls!). Personally, I would want to ask Jesus how he did the trick with the loaves and fishes so i could perform it at my next gig. The only downside would be, anyone who became proficient at lucid dreaming, would never want to be awake.
